Red cell membrane cytoskeleton and the control of membrane properties.

چکیده

Introduction The material properties of the red cell membrane, in particular its unique stability towards shearing forces and its elasticity with respect to linear deformation, result from the interaction of the phospholipid bilayer with the membrane cytoskeleton that covers its cytoplasmic surface. When this protein network is extracted or destroyed by proteolysis the membrane spontaneously vesiculates. The pathways through which the proteins exert their effects on the membrane properties are not known. Three types of interaction between the membrane and the membrane cytoskeleton can be identified, namely bridging of spectrin to band 3, the major transmembrane protein, by ankyrin [ 11, binding of protein 4.1 to one or more integral membrane proteins (see below), and a weak, but globally important, direct association between cytoskeletal protein and phospholipid, almost certainly phosphatidylserine [2, 31. We consider here only the protein-protein interactions and the manner in which they might regulate the membrane properties.

Red cell membrane protein abnormalities as defined by sds-page among patients with anaemia in a west african region hospital practice

Background: Erythrocytes require an ability to deform and to withstand shear stress while negotiating the microcirculation. These properties are largely due to their excess surface area per volume and the characteristics of the membrane’s protein. Deficiencies of these proteins are associated with chronic haemolysis. Methods: This was a cross sectional  study aimed at determining the prevalenc...

Non-thermal Production of Natural betalain Colorant Concentrate from Red Beet Extract by Using the Osmotic Distillation

Background and Objectives: Red beet extract concentrate can be used as a natural colorant in food products; however, destructive effects of thermal methods to produce juice concentrate decrease nutritional value in the final product. Materials and Methods: In this study, red beet extract was concentrated using osmotic distillation method, and the best pretreatment was evaluated to increase t...

Porous Proton Exchange Membrane Based Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework-8 (ZIF-8)

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are emerging material class for the past few years due to its tailorability characteristics for various applications. However, the research and development (R&D) of MOFs is still scarce for fuel cell system. This may be due to the several difficulties faced in selecting a good MOFs-based electrolyte, which consequently affects both proton conduction and methanol ...

Early induction of phenolic compounds in aluminum-treated roots of Brassica oleracea L. Roya Saghian1 and Faezeh Ghanati2*

There are evidences showing that adverse impacts of aluminum (Al) on plants growth and development are associated with its effect on plasma membrane and cell wall. Influence of Al on peroxidation of membrane lipids, wall-bound phenolics, lignin, soluble phenolics and the activity of certain enzymes involved in metabolism of phenols, i.e., phenylalanine ammonia lyase (PAL) and polyphenol oxidase...
